I guess this was the most unusual and awkward pose I had attempted. It certainly proved to be a marathon effort to paint from life.
I had just recently returned from a trip to Europe where I studyed all the great paintings I had up until then only seen in reproduction.
When I got back to my little insular world in Taranaki I sank into a deep depression that proved to be quite a debilitating illness.
In fact this painting as well as another upside-down portrait proved to be some of the last paintings I would paint for two years.
Those years are largely a blank to me today. I spent most of it sleeping or just vegetating in a chair.
