Painted while still living at home with my parents at Blagdon Road in NP this image is perhaps redolent of teenage angst.
It marked an early change in direction my painting was taking. I had recently just worked my way through a short lived abstract phase where
I was very interested in expressive and "action painting". I had started exhibiting my work and had met a few other artists who gave me
a bit of advice and encouragement. In Taranaki in the 70's Michael Smither was the biggest influence and I had turned to a more hard-edged
realistic style imbued with a certain surreal quality.
I still was "no good at faces".
