This was a rather odd one. I usually try to avoid any deliberate narrative in my paintings. They tend to end up looking more like illustrations rather than paintings.

At this time during the 1980's, I used to spend a lot of time walking on New Plymouth's Back Beach. When it was breeding season the seagulls became very territorial and would swoop down on me in a rather alarming manner.

I guess this is also the only time I have incorporated the landscape into a self portrait.
