I had been examining the state of my teeth in a mirror, as you do, and was thinking of the "Sans Teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything" quote. I knew it was going to
be an ambitious aspect to try and paint but the image kept haunting me. And then I read an article in the NZ Listener by the then infant prodigy of the
NZ art mafia, Justin Paton, decrying that "painting in the 1990's is like flossing your teeth in a famine". Well the irony of that resonated with me
and so this painting was the result.
It has proved to be a surprisingly popular image and has been reproduced in various magazines, including a dental one, and was subsequently purchased by
a dentist.
