Both the image and the title have an intentional element of self-parody about them. In fact I was going to title it "Self Portrait as a Serious Artiste"
I have always been aware of the danger inherent in the self portrait genre of taking oneself too seriously and striking
somewhat heroic and pretentious poses with no sense of humour or irony.
I submitted this painting to the Wallace Trust competition - arguably the most prestigous and coveted art award in NZ. It was returned to me with a
severe crack in the head. Someone had obviously dropped something quite heavy onto it cracking the hardboard surface it was painted on.
I took it as a clear sign. I haven't entered the Wallace art award since.
