I was still wrestling with with the technical problems of painting. It seems to me that the more you learn the more difficult it actually
is to paint because you have more choices. It is no longer a simple matter of just painting the way you do because that is the only way you are
able to apply the paint. I suspect this is a problem that any artist who goes past a certain point with their facility and technique feels.
So how do you paint? I feel that I must relearn how to paint with each new painting. Apart from technical concerns this image seems quite uncomfortable. It is looking down into a mirror and there is a strong diagonal in the top right corner which is actually a skylight. But it kind of looks like a guillotine that is about to decapitate me! My hair resembles a nest of serpents and the elbows are literally pushing at the edges of the picture. I needed more room. |
