I think I was working in a shared TACO studio on King Street at about this time. Michael Smither had one side and I worked in the other
divided by a curtain. Tom Mutch also had a space there.
I had had a haircut.
This was the first self portrait I was really happy about. It was painted while looking down into a small mirror I held in my hand.
I just tried to paint as objective and honest a picture as I could.
Michael told me it was "a great painting" and he advised the then director of the Govett Brewster Gallery that they should purchase it for their collection,
which they did.
